Making Chaos Beautiful
Before the Covid phase I had encountered a chaos situation while stuck in traffic on one of the busiest streets in my city .My objective, a restaurant where my wife and my lunch awaited me, stood on the other side of the road. I could see the food, smell it and built up quite appetite. Stranded within the chaos the only barrier between me and my lunch was crossing the street.
The road was full of motor scooters, bicycles, motorcycles, cars, trucks and buses.. I saw a family of 5 riding a scooter — sans helmets, of course. People passed, stopped, rotated and crisscrossed the middle lines with utter confusion. Traffic flowed both ways within the same lane, more traffic merged from the side streets.
To me it had been a scene of absurd chaos with no order. The traffic lights compounded my problem. Under this onslaught the flashing green "walk" sign forced me to move away from the farther end of the street. I was able to search for something to eat (and an area to sit) on my side of the road when an older gentleman took my arm and said, "Crossing the street is not a problem, but an activity like a dance."
Buses and trucks barrel through the streets, stopping for nobody. People reach their destinations and life goes on. And the best part to survive isn't to struggle against the flow, but to approach it sort as a dance. Do you dance through your own life, career and business and the surrounding chaos?
On any given day, everyone must adapt to life and undergo it gracefully. Occasionally things are going well, and then out of the blue something happens, forcing us to stop or change directions. In my work, obstacles and competitors often appear within the road ahead of me. I have many choices: hit them head on, turn down take a detour, avoid them altogether or just flow with them.
In the turmoil of your own life each choice you create affects your outcome. Every day in my line of work, I face the traffic, dance with it to the simplest of my ability and hope to enjoy continued success. You can do a similar thing if you cultivate the grace to flow with chaos.
